Sometimes a message needs to be heard or read multiple times for it to ring through to the person on the other end. Last week was another celebration of the birthday and life of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Yet, there was something unsettling about this iteration of his birthday. Something that undoubtedly occurred in the past but was extra disgusting on January 18, 2021. The continued misuse of MLK’s quotes and legacies by those who stand directly opposed to the message and purpose he lived up until his life was tragically cut short. In a previous post, GWI discussed...

Millions of people released a collective sigh of relief on Saturday when the 2020 election was called for President-Elect Joe Biden. The celebration that occurred in the streets across multiple cities was understandable, yet the reality of the election showed that there’s a lot of questions and even more work left to be done to begin correcting the generational stains of the American way known to many but newly uncovered by some in the last few years. And it continues. As much of the United States is still dealing with a global pandemic, people are taking to the streets to demonstrate against police brutality and the needless killing of yet another African American. This time it was Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This situation has gravely escalated as 17-year old; Kyle Rittenhouse from Illinois traveled across state lines and has murdered two individuals and injured a third. Rittenhouse is a white male who in multiple videos has been shown talking and working with police officers in the area. This is a tragic situation and in no way...

The unfortunate murder of George Floyd has sparked nationwide protest that is not new. Many of the cries of “No Justice, No Peace” come from the same place as when it was chanted other times such as the 1960s. One phrase aspect of the moment, defunding the police, has gained a lot of steam as well. As those with negative intentions attempt to twist the meaning and purpose of said call to defend law enforcement, there is a space needed to explain what exactly defunding the police means. There will still be those that feign a misunderstanding, but the push...
